Chapter 02 · Database & method

Our corpus reads 22 Canadian dailies,
in both languages, from every region and provinces.

The corpus reads 22 Canadian titles: 10 provinces and territories, 15 English-language publications and 7 French-language ones, from 1978 to 2026. We publish the metadata and our own annotations; the full text stays with the publisher.

Choosing the sources

Four rules set the list of titles

None ranks above the others: they apply together to every title on the list.

Territory

Every region read through a major daily

The corpus covers 10 provinces and territories, from the Times Colonist in Victoria to The Telegram in St. John’s.

Languages

Both official languages, one grid

We follow 15 English-language titles and 7 French-language ones, annotated by matched BERT and CamemBERT models on the same grid of 65 categories.

Readerships

The country’s most-read titles

The list brings together 5 national titles and 17 regional dailies, chosen on their readership and on their weight in their community’s public debate.

Additions

The list stays open

CBC.ca and Radio-Canada.ca joined the corpus in 2026: born online, they publish all day and feed detection continuously.

The sources

The 22 titles and their article volumes

The volume column counts the climate articles kept for each title across the whole archive. Within each family, titles are ranked from smallest to largest volume; the column headers re-sort the table, and clicking a row opens the outlet’s card: frame profile, CCF summary of its recent coverage, latest events covered and latest articles added to the corpus.

What the list covers, and what it leaves out

The 22 titles span 10 provinces and territories and both official languages, from 1978 to 2026. Prince Edward Island, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut have no daily of their own in the corpus: what is published there enters it only when a national title picks it up.

Our archive databases no longer carry 1 title, followed here by its last year of collection: La Presse (2017). Its past corpus is still served and analysed, no new article is added to it, and any comparison across outlets over recent years has to account for that.

3 titles are collected again after an interruption, and keep a gap our sources do not fill: Acadie Nouvelle (2025-04 to 2026-04), Le Devoir (2026-01 to 2026-04), Le Droit (2024-01 to 2026-04). Articles before and after those bounds are in the corpus; for those months, an empty result says nothing about how the title covered the subject.
